Lions Foundation of Canada – Walks for Dog Guides.
The motto that unites Lions clubs the world over is "We Serve" and it's what our Lions and Lionesses endeavour to live up to each and every day.
From our annual Walk for Dog Guides to our bi-weekly T.G.I.F dinners, we strive to improve our community through service. Here's a list of current events The Peterborough Lions Club is proud to partake in:
Peace Poster Contest
The Peterborough Lions Club, in conjunction with Lions clubs from around the world, is proud to present the International Peace Poster Contest. The theme this year is "A Celebration of Peace" and is open to youth between 11 and 13 years old. Each poster will be judged on originality, artistic merit and expression of the theme. The lucky winner will receive $5000.00 and a trip to a special award ceremony. Please contact us for contest rules.
Effective Speaking Contest
The effective (public) speaking contest is run each year in early spring with contestants writing and
presenting a speech on a topic of their choice (excluding politics or religion). Winners from our local level will progress to the District level and if successful move on to the Ontario finals.
Walk for Dog Guides
The Local Lions and Lioness club host the annual Walk for Dog Guides with funds going to Lions Foundation of Canada. Participants campaign for pledges and enjoy a 5 to 10 km walk along the Rotary trail. Proceeds go to help purchase and train dogs for the blind, seeing impaired, hearing, physically challenged, special needs, autistic and diabetic persons.
Once a year we have a charity raffle with the money going to a designated charity in our city. Watch for our members in the malls, home shows, and throughout the community selling these tickets.
Dragon Boat Race
Every June, the Peterborough Lions Club is proud to partner with Peterborough's Dragon Boat Festival to support breast cancer care in our community. The Lions run the refreshment booths for the many patrons attending this event. Another chance to give back to the community!
The Peterborough Lions Club is most fortunate to be one of the groups who volunteer at the Delta Bingo Hall on designated Saturday Nights. We have been a member of the Delta Bingo Association for over 20 years. It is our pleasure to be part of the list of volunteers who come out to service the people of Peterborough with the funds going back into the community.
The Peterborough Lions Club is known for many ongoing projects: We collect used eye glasses, hearing aids, and pop tabs. The glasses and hearing aids are refurbished, and graded. The glasses are sent to third world countries for those who need them. The hearing aids are sent to the Canadian Hearing Society for disbursement. The pop tabs are sent to Scouts Canada to help with their projects for youth.
Vision and Hearing Screening
A big part of a Lion's duty is to restore and improve the hearing and vision of those in our community. As such, we are actively involved with vision and hearing screening in local schools for youth in Sr. Kindergarten and Grade 1. A form is sent home to the parent requesting permission to screen and report any failures along with a follow-up report once the screenings are completed. We are very proud of the impact and success this program has had in the community.
T.G.I.F—Thank Goodness It’s Friday—on the second Friday of each month The Peterborough Lions host a supper at 7:00 p.m. Come and enjoy an excellent meal, fellowship and fun for only $15.00. The meal consists of a varied main course, dessert, tea and coffee (a bar is available).
April is convention month for the Lions of District A-3. The convention each year is held in Kingston at the
Ambassador Hotel and is a great time for Lions and Lionesses to relax and enjoy the program. A time to meet and visit with friends and family, and be entertained.
